Best Supplements for Over 50s: What the Science Says

As we age, our nutritional needs change in ways that diet alone often cannot fully address. After the age of 50, the body undergoes a range of physiological changes — from reduced stomach acid production affecting nutrient absorption, to declining hormone levels, slower metabolism, and increased risk of chronic disease. The result is that certain vitamins, minerals, and compounds become increasingly important, yet harder to obtain in sufficient quantities from food alone.

1. Vitamin D3 with K2
Vitamin D deficiency is particularly prevalent in older adults in the UK. The skin's ability to synthesise Vitamin D from sunlight declines significantly with age [1], and reduced outdoor activity compounds the problem. The NHS recommends 10 micrograms (400 IU) daily for all adults over 65, though many clinicians advocate for higher doses of 1,000–2,000 IU to achieve optimal blood levels [4].
2. Magnesium
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body [5], yet dietary surveys consistently show that a significant proportion of UK adults over 50 fall below recommended intake levels [6]. Magnesium absorption also decreases with age due to reduced stomach acid production and changes in gut function [7].
Adequate magnesium intake is associated with better bone density, improved sleep quality, reduced muscle cramps, healthy blood pressure, and lower risk of type 2 diabetes [8]. 3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil)
Omega-3 fatty acids — particularly EPA and DHA — are among the most extensively researched supplements for healthy ageing. They play a critical role in cardiovascular health, with a meta-analysis in the Journal of the American Heart Association finding that omega-3 supplementation significantly reduced triglyceride levels and cardiovascular risk markers [9].
Beyond heart health, DHA is a structural component of brain cell membranes and is associated with cognitive function and reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline [10]. Omega-3s also have well-documented anti-inflammatory properties relevant to joint health and mobility [11].
The British Heart Foundation recommends eating oily fish twice a week; for those who don't, a high-quality fish oil supplement providing at least 500mg of combined EPA and DHA daily is a practical alternative.
4. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)
CoQ10 is a compound central to cellular energy production in the mitochondria. Natural CoQ10 levels in the body decline significantly with age — by the age of 80, tissue levels may be 50% lower than in young adults [12]. This decline is associated with reduced energy, increased fatigue, and impaired cardiovascular function.
CoQ10 supplementation has been shown to improve energy levels, support heart muscle function, and reduce oxidative stress in older adults [13]. 5. Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 absorption declines markedly with age due to reduced production of intrinsic factor and stomach acid — both of which are required for B12 absorption from food [15]. It is estimated that up to 20% of older adults may be B12 deficient or borderline deficient [16].
B12 is essential for neurological function, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency can cause fatigue, memory problems, nerve damage, and anaemia [17]. 6. Glucosamine and Chondroitin
Joint health becomes an increasing concern after 50, with osteoarthritis affecting an estimated 8.75 million people in the UK [19]. Glucosamine and chondroitin are naturally occurring compounds found in cartilage that play a structural role in maintaining joint integrity.
Clinical evidence for glucosamine and chondroitin is mixed, but several studies — including the large GAIT trial — have found significant benefits for pain reduction in moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis [20].
